Our Direct Access training courses are flexible and run 7 days a week. You can run your DAS over weekends to fit it around work or choose to train with us during the week.
Unlike many bike schools, we do not provide “block booking” courses for 4, 5, or 6 days, our lessons are designed around you. We strongly believe that having some time between lessons alleviates the pressure and allows you time to assimilate and absorb what you have been taught. On average, we would expect the course to comprise around 3 or 4 days training. Some people take a little longer, others less. The amount of training required therefore determines the cost of the course, both you and your instructor will know when you are ready for your test, ensuring you only pay for what you need.
In simple terms, we train you to be able to control the bike confidently and effectively both on and off the road thus delivering ALL of the skills you need to pass both Module 1 and Module 2 prior to taking Module 1. By combining the training for both elements of the test, we firmly believe that the approach consistently produces better, safer and more confident riders.
A lot of press coverage has been focussed on certain elements of the new Module 1 Test, and schools inability to replicate the test environment successfully but at Cheshire Biker Training, the Module 1 Test Centre is located at our CBT site in Macclesfield allowing us to train you at the Test Centre in exactly the same environment as on your test! This is a pretty unique offering compared to all the other motorcycle schools in the North West.
A typical Direct Access course will cover the following:
- A detailed introduction to the larger and more powerful motorbikes, and the differences between the types of machine you may have ridden previously. We conduct this in a safe off road environment before transferring to normal roads.
- On road, you will become proficient in all aspects of road riding – planning and awareness, control and safety.
- Unlike some schools, we train you to ride competently and safely after your test – not just to pass your test.
Module 1 Test training will be undertaken on the actual test site. This will include all aspects of the test and what you need to do to ensure a pass, including the slalom and figure of eight, slow ride, u-turn, avoidance and the emergency stop.
The laws for motorcycles tests changed on 19th January 2013 under the Third European Driving Licence Directive (3DLD).
There are two main categories:
Licence Type A – Large Motorcycle
To obtain this licence you must be 24 years of age (or have held an A2 motorbike licence for 2 years already).
The test must be taken on a machine of at least 595cc with a power output of more than 53.6 Brake Horse Power (bhp). You will have to take a Theory Test, along with Module 1 and Module 2 of the Practical Test.
On passing - you can ride any sized motorcycle with no restrictions.
Licence Type A2 – Medium Motorcycle
To get this licence you will need to be 19 years of age.
The test must be taken on a machine larger than 395cc and have a power output of between 33 – 46.6bhp. On passing - you can ride any motorcycle up to 46Bhp. Many bikes produce 46bhp as standard but you can also restrict any motorcycle to 46Bhp, so long as the original power output was not more than twice this size (i.e. over 92bhp).
There is no automatic upgrades of licence - if you wish to move up to a full (A) licence you will need to retake the module 1 and 2 tests on an unrestricted 600cc bike when you have reached 24 years of age or held the A2 licence for 2 years.
A1 - aged 17 you may take your test on a 125cc bike. You will be limited to just 125cc but will be able to take off your L plates and carry a passenger. There is no automatic upgrade after 2 years as there was before Jan 19th 2013.
AM - Aged 16 you may take a full moped test - you can ride up to 49cc moped with no L plates and carry a pillion passenger
